I MISS THE OLD NEW YORK.

...But the reality is that I live and profit from the New New York. I live with this struggle everyday. It's part of my love/hate relationship with NYC. STAPLE/REED FIELD TRIP.

Recently, the Staple and Reed Space teams got together and shared a night out on the town. In NYC, you can venture onto 32nd Street and be completely transported to Seoul, Korea. In this hood everything is 24 hours and BBQ'd (Korean Style). So first stop was a feast of grilled meats. This was then followed by Korea's favorite pastime, Karaoke! I left early as it was way past my bedtime, but I heard the kiddies burned the midnight oil.
先日StapleとReed Spaceチームが集り、楽しい一夜を一緒に過ごしました。ニューヨークでは、32番街に行けば一瞬のうちに韓国のソウルに行けちゃいます。そこは、すべて24時間開いていて、韓国風BBQがあるので最初に焼肉を食べに行きました。その次は韓国でも定番の娯楽、カラオケに行きました。寝る時間をゆいに越えていたので、僕は早退しましたが、みんなは夜中まで楽しんだようです。

BADU @ RADIO CITY.

(The Roots opening for Ms. Badu.) (ザ・ルーツがオープニングを飾りました。）

A few days ago, I got to witness Erykah Badu at Radio City Music Hall. This is seriously one of the best venues to watch live music. Every seat feels close to the stage, the seating is mad comfy, the setting is just beautiful...it's almost perfect. The only drawback is really lack of crowd control. I find the ushers let people walk around anytime they want. Badu is one of my favorite artists. I've seen her live at smaller venues plenty of times (SOBs, Wetlands, Bowery Ballroom, etc). So I was surprised to see her able to easily command this larger stage. She friggin' KILLED it...effortlessly. Oh and for the cherry on top, The Roots opened for her. Y'all know how good The Roots are live, right? Well, she killed THEM.
数日前、僕はラジオシティー・ミュージックホールでErykah Baduを見に行きました。この開場はライブを見るのには最高です。すべての席はステージに近く臨場感に溢れていて、シートもすごく座り心地がいいし、セッティングもきれいで。。。ほぼ完璧。ただし、観客のコントロールができていなかったのがちょっと残念でした。スタッフや係りの人はいつでも誰でも歩き回るのを許していました。Baduさんは僕のお気に入りのアーティストのひとり。もっと小さい会場（SOBs、Wetlands、Bowery Ballroomなどなど）には何度も見に行ったことがありますが、今回の大きな開場でそつなく指揮を取れていたのは驚きでした。彼女はヤバかった。それに加えて、The Rootsがオープニングを飾りました。みんなThe Rootsのライブは凄いことは知っているよね？それでも、彼女の独占でした。

I love that Erykah didn't really do any of the usual suspect hits. She stuck to songs that fans who bought the album would appreciate. All in all this was an amazing 3 hour show. Worth every single penny.

THE ETHICIST.

For this past Spring 2008 collection, I created a shirt called THE ETHICIST. This was basically my fanboy shoutout to one of my favorite columns by Randy Cohen in The New York Times Sunday Magazine. I think in this day and age of crooked cops, corrupt politicians and pedophile priests, an Ethicist is the perfect gauge for determining the The Good, The Bad and The Difference. It's one of my favorite reads. So it was to my pleasant surprise when Randy actually contacted me after he was sent a tee. He graciously invited me to come to his place and guest record his podcast for the NY Times. It was great fun to meet the man behind the ethics in person. It's funny how one t-shirt can create such a cool ripple effect.

今年の２００８年春コレクションにTHE ETHICIST（倫理家）というTシャツを作りました。これは、ニューヨークタイムズのサンデーマガジンに掲載されているRandy Cohenさんが書く僕の大好きなコラムへ捧げたものです。不誠実な警察、堕落した政治家、モラルのない聖職者などであふれているこの時代、EthicistはThe Good.The Bad and The Difference(良、悪、とその違い）(link to book)を測る良い基準だと思います。僕のお気に入りの読み物なので、Ｔシャツを贈った後にRandyさんから連絡があったときは驚きました。彼は僕をニューヨークタイムズのポッドキャストのゲスト として招待してくれました。Ethicistの本人にお会いできて楽しかったです。たった一枚のTシャツがこんなに面白い波及効果を作り出すとは。ありがとうございました、Randyさん。

THE PRISM COLLECTION.

OK, I cant's contain it no longer! I'm very excited about The Prism Collection. Headporter is one of my favorite brands of all time. Not just bag brands; but brands in general.
Some background info: About 10 years ago, Hiroshi Fujiwara used to have a store called Readymade in the Harajuku area of Tokyo. Readymade's concept was all collaborations, all the time. It was a brand that was totally based on the idea of collaboration. One of the early collaborations they worked on was with the legendary Japanese luggage company, Porter. The collaboration proved to be so successful that the relationship eventually morphed into a full capsule collection dubbed "Headporter". That Readymade store would then eventually become the Headporter flagship store which still stands today.
About a year and a half ago, I was bouncing an idea off Hiroshi about doing a collection together. Headporter is divided into sub collections such as "Blackbeauty", "Brownie", "Tanker", etc. etc. But they are typically very simple, clean and subtle. I wanted to do a new collection that was more colorful and eye-catching. As with everything Staple and Reed Space do, I also wanted to do a collection that drew inspiration back to education and thought provocation. My inspiration was to do something like the old JanSport backpacks kids used to rock to school. I loved the colors they came in and that really durable ballistic high resistance nylon they use.
The colors used in this collection were derived from the colors of the spectrum. Everyone remembers ROY G. BIV, right? Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Indigo and Violet—the colors that make up the visible spectrum. I always think of Reed Space in a similar way. We represent so many different brands, designers, creators and cultures, that we're like a PRISM to our customers and visitors. Hence, we titled this collaboration, THE PRISM COLLECTION.
With 7 colors in the visible spectrum, we worked on 7 silhouettes...each essential to the modern day student/globetrotter:
はい、もう我慢できません。Prism Collectionのリリースがとても楽しみです。Headporterはバッグブランドとしてはもちろん、全てのメーカーのなかでも素晴らしいブランドだと思います。
まず背景を説明しますと、１０年程前に藤原ヒロシ氏が手掛けたお店 Readymade が原宿にありました。Readymadeのコンセプトは常にすべてがコラボレーション。ブランド自体にコラボという概念が根底にあったのです。初期には日本のカバン会社の Porter とコラボレーションをしていました。このコラボがあまりにも成功したため、その後も関係が続きHeadporterが誕生しました。そのReadymadeが後のHeadporterフラッグシップストアとなるのです。
１年半程前に僕はヒロシ氏にコレクションを一緒にやらないかと投げかけてみました。Headporterは "Blackbeauty"、"Brownie"、"Tanker"などのサブコレクションに別れていますが、共通してシンプルでクリーンで控えめなものが多いいです。僕はこれに対してもっとカラフルで目を引くような新しいコレクションを提案しました。そして Staple と Reed Space が目的としている教育や発想を刺激するようなコレクションにしたかったのです。当初のインスピレーションは 子供の時に学校で使っていたJanSport のバックパックでした。カラーバリエーションも耐久性がバツグンのナイロン素材も大好きでした。
今回のコレクションでは光スペクトルの色を採用しました。学校で習ったのを覚えてますか？赤、橙、黄、緑、青、藍、紫からなる光のスペクトラルを。僕にとってReed Spaceはこれに似ているんです。たくさんのブランド、デザイナー、クリエーター、カルチャーなどを取り扱っているので来店した方の為にプリズム（分光器）の役割を果たしたいのです。よって、このコラボレーションを THE PRISM COLLECTION と名付けました。
現代の学生や世界を股に掛ける人には欠かせない７つの必需品にスペクトルの７色を落とし込んで：

ADC-DJ.

I was recently asked to DJ for the 87th Awards Gala at The Art Directors Club. The idea was to invite designers who also DJ'ed to spin at the event. Even though I am unofficially retired from regular DJ gigs, it's always fun to get out and spin a few records. (Even though it looks like I'm checking emails.)
先日 The Art Directors Club で行われた第８７回 Awards Gala でDJを依頼されました。DJができるデザイナーを招待するのが目的だったそうです。普通のイベントなどでDJすることはもうしないのですが、たまにレコードを回すのも悪くないですね。（一見メールをチェックしているように見えますが、違います。）

Saying goodbye to my iPhone. And hello to my new iPhone. I gotta give props to the Apple Genius Bar customer service. I walked in, told the Genius of my problem (not getting steady EDGE service anymore) and he just hands me a brand new iPhone! Sweet! The only part that sucks is that I lost all the photos I took with the phone's camera. Oh well, this should hold me over until the 3G comes out this summer. (Fingers crossed.)

Ah well...that's what happens in your elderly years. According to sneaker lore, there was a legendary day where Tinker Hatfield went into the gym with his usual duffel bag of assorted shoes: A running shoe, a basketball shoe, and a tennis shoe. Then it hit him. Couldn't he create a shoe that was made to handle all those activities? You know, something that could be utilized for cross training. He went back to Nike and pitched the idea. They hated it. Why would Nike want people to stop buying 3 pairs of shoes and just buy one that could do them all? Luckily, Tinker didn't listen. (it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.) And lucky for Bo Jackson, Nike's biggest multi-sport athlete, he had something to rock when he said "Bo Knows." In retrospect, the entire collection of Bo Jackson endorsed Cross Training shoes were WAY ahead of their time. These 2004 retros of the 1991 originals were a must have for any true sneakerhead.
ほぼ９０％の確率でナイキタウンで購入したと思います。箱に付いている値札（$90.00）はナイキタウンのものに見えますが、そこで買った覚えがないんです。まあ、年をとると記憶力も低下しますからね。とにかく、伝説によるとTinker Hatfield がいつものようにランニングシューズとバスケットシューズとテニスシューズをスポーツバッグに詰めてジムに通っていると、突然ひらめいたのです。これらの競技が全部できるような靴をつくれないものかと。クロストレーニングに実用的な靴を。彼はNikeに行きこのアイディアを提案しました。Nike側はこれを大批判しました。多目的なスニーカーを発売してしまったら、今まで各競技の靴をそれぞれ買っていた人が１足しか買わなくなってしまうのではないかと。幸い Tinker はそんな事ではあきらめません（謝ることは許可を得ることより簡単でしたから）。そして幸いにも、当時Nike がサポートしていたアスリートの中で最もマルチであった Bo Jackson にとってこの靴は最適だったため、"Bo Knows" 広告で多いに露出されました。いま振り返ると、当時 Bo Jackson が推進していたクロストレーニングシューズは時代の遥か先を行っていたように思えます。２００４年に復刻された１９９１年オリジナルモデルはスニーカーヘッドにとってはマストアイテムです。

KINOKI.

I am a sucker for infomercials. I just tried these Kinoki Foot Pads out. They are supposed to suck toxins and heavy metals out of your body by using these pads that you stick to the bottom of your feet while you sleep. The verdict: It did "something". Not sure if it sucked out toxins. But my feet felt cool and lighter the following day. Not worth the nastiness involved in removing the pads though. Try it once. You might love it.
僕はテレビショッピングに目がありません。最近はこのKinoki 足パッドを試してみました。寝る前に両足裏にこのパッドを張ると、寝ている間に体にたまった毒素や金属を抜き取ってくれるらしいのです。判定は、「何かしら」の効果がありました。毒素を吸い取ってくれたかは不明ですが、翌日足のほてりが解消され、軽く感じました。ただ、パッドをはがす時のわずらわしさが欠点です。是非お試しあれ。もしかしたらすごく気に入るかもしれません。

What happens when you mix sport and suit? You get these 2 pieces. The track pants are cut as traditional athletic jogging pants, but done in a super thin wool suiting material. At first glance, you look ready for the red carpet. But feel comfy as Minnie Ripperton on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The shorts have the same concept but are cut in basketball shorts silhouette.
スポーツとスーツをミックスするとどうなるでしょう？答えはこの２点。トラックパンツのシルエットはいわゆるジョギングパンツと一緒なのですが、素材にはスーツ用の極薄ウールを使用しています。一見レッドカーペットでもいけちゃいそうですが、履き心地は日曜日の昼下がりのミニー・リパートンのように気持ちいいです。ショーツも同じコンセプトですが、バスケットボールショーツのシルエットで。
