
Most people probably couldn't guess that the best selling game of all time for Sony Playstation is in fact, Gran Turismo. The driving simulation game has taken the idea of simulators to a whole new level. GT has now sold well over 50 million copies. The makers of the GT series is Polyphony Digital, which is a small division of Sony that's headed up by Kazunori Yamauchi. Kaz has been the Producer of every single GT edition to date. I recently got a chance to visit the Polphony offices in Tokyo and see how they go about making this labor intensive game.

I guess it's true what they say. If you love what you do, it's not really work. Which might explain why almost every desk at Polyphony has a cot or sleeping bag underneath. And even when it doesn't...

For most games, the sound affects are a generic "vroom-vroom" noise. The Polyphony guys take it to the next level. They bring in each and every vehicle and record their engine noises in full detail. They also take the time to shoot every conceivable angle for their rendering artists to reference.
ほとんどのゲームの場合、音響効果は一般的な「ブーンブーン」音です。Polyphonyの人たちは次のレベルを追求します。各車種を持ってきて、エンジンの音を最深部までレコーディングします。また、アーティストたちのために車種のあらゆるアングルの写真を撮ります。




They record sound from the exterior and interior of the car. As well as at every gear and RPM. And if its a convertible? Of course they capture how it sounds with the top down and with the top up. Can you say O.C.D.??

You have totally and accurately presented us readers with the full essence of Japan including the work ethic, attention to detail, the unbelievable results from the combination of said qualities, quality still matters, the customer is god, the smoking indoors :), did I mention the work ethic?
