WHY SPONSOR?

nikenytunes.jpg

Sometimes, critics ask why sports companies like Nike spend so much on sponsoring athletes. Last weeks New York Sunday Times Sports section pretty much answers that question. This probably happens all the time in many publications...It just hit me though...on the cover alone, there are 6 Swoosh sightings. Imagine if Nike had to pay for 6 ad spaces on the cover of the Sunday Times? When you look at it that way, sponsorship money might look like a bargain.

i think they should still place ads in award-winning magazines like URB because they are reaching a different audience. don't you agree, mr engie?

Yes, but again you have to watch out. You don't want your STAR caught in the bad limelight.

The other thing that people don't often realize is that a $90 million deal with LeBron is so totally worth it. Nike's revenues are $16 billion. So let's take a guess. Maybe Brand Jordan brings in $1 billion? Let's say $500 million at worst. So let's say LeBron's line brings in maybe half of the worst-case scenario, which might be $250 million? So you put in $90 million and you get out $250 million. Assuming you had $90 mil, who wouldn't make that deal?
